In
cultivation the vanilla is trained to a height which will
facilitate hand pollination and harvesting. The ideal support
for vanilla are Jatropha curcas
and Gliricidia sepium.
They are both used as cuttings and are highly recommended
as they are excellent grip for vanilla plant and strong enough to support strong
winds. Above trees are most commonly used in Madagascar
and both propagation from cuttings and seeds grow rapidly.
As shown in the photo, Gliricidia sepium (pink flowers)
stems are planted directly into the soil and from the cutting
on the top, thin shoots and low branches coming up to form
light and provide partial shade. Seeds
are available for sale.
